A pioneering study in the US revealed that normal house dust is capable of carrying hormone-altering chemicals that prompt cells in the body to accumulate fat.
Experiments found that even small amounts of dust, which can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin, were enough to provoke the effect.
Aside from triggering allergies and occasional sneezes, dust that commonly collects in homes, offices, schools, and other interior spaces seems innocuous enough. In fact, a “dirty” little secret — based on American Cleaning Institute data — is that most of us fail to thoroughly clean our homes on a regular basis.
Priorities soon may change, because new research published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology finds that common household dust can cause fat cells to accumulate more triglycerides, or fat.
